September 1 – NIghtlife: Fermented Nightlife – California Academy of Sciences – NightLife breaks down the science of fermentation—from beer to cheese and everything in between! VISIT THE SITE
September 2 – David Alan Grier – Cobb’s Comedy Club - David Alan Grier is known for his sketch comedy work and impressions on In Living Color, and for starring in NBC's DAG, Comedy Central's Chocolate News, and the hit blaxploitation parody I'm Gonna Git You Sucka. VISIT THE SITE
September 3 – Yerba Buena Gardens Festival Presents Lavay Smith & Her Red Hot Skillet Lickers – Esplanade, Yerba Buena Gardens - Lavay and Her Red Hot Skillet Lickers highlight the connection between jazz and dance while exploring stylistic innovations and regional influences. The project includes dancers to provide a demo accompanying the concert. VISIT THE SITE
September 4 – San Francisco Fest Featuring Journey, Steve Miller Band, Santana & The Doobie Brothers – AT&T Park - This historic concert is the only opportunity to see these iconic Bay Area bands performing on the same bill. VISIT THE SITE
September 5 – The Campaign for Art – SFMOMA – This exhibition — one of several highlighting contributions from the museum’s Campaign for Art — introduces the range and quality of these newly committed and gifted works in a multidisciplinary selection that strengthens and deepens SFMOMA’s collection. September 6 – Worshipping Women: Power and Devotion in Indian Painting –Asian Art Museum – In this intimate exhibition, a selection of paintings from the museum’s collection focuses on three aspects of female power: as devout worshipers; as goddesses and consorts to male gods; and as ascetics (yoginis). The galleries nearby display additional manifestations of the goddess figure in sculptural form. VISIT THE SITE
September 7 – San Francisco Symphony 105th Season Opening Night Gala – Davies Symphony Hall - Toast sparkling wine and walk the red carpet in luxurious style—then sit back and enjoy a spectacular concert conducted by Michael Tilson Thomas featuring Renée Fleming, whose “dazzling technique and glamorous persona make her the complete package,” (St. Paul Star Tribune) and “America’s favorite mezzo” (Gramophone) Susan Graham. September 12 – In That Case: Havruta in Contemporary Art- Kota Ezawa and James Kirby Rogers – Contemporary Jewish Museum - Based on the Talmudic study principle of havruta—the study of religious texts by people in pairs—In That Case at The CJM encourages learning through fellowship for Bay Area artists, established professionals, museum staff, and the entire CJM community. September 13 – 25th Annual SF Fringe Festival Presents A Mathematician At Play – EXIT Studio - Presenting a show about mathematicians and their obsession with numbers, featuring uncanny feats of lightning calculation and super-mental demonstrations. VISIT THE SITE
September 14 – On The Grid: Textiles and Minimalism – DeYoung Museum - Together, more than two dozen textiles from the Museums’ permanent collection examine various aspects of the Minimalist art aesthetic that address abstraction, precision, geometry, materiality, and process. September 18 – The Park: A Love Story Golden Gate Park Landscapes and Flora by Stephen Kane – San Francisco Botanical Garden - The Helen Crocker Russell Library is pleased to present a new exhibition by photographer Stephen Kane. September 19 – Wish Upon A Star: The Art of Pinocchio – Walt Disney Family Museum – This never-before-seen exhibition created by the museum allows visitors to discover the artistic process and step behind-the-scenes to explore how one of the most influential animated films in history was produced: Walt Disney’s 1940 feature-length masterpiece Pinocchio. September 21 – 2016 Architecture and the City Film Festival Presents Lost Landscapes of San Francisco – Koret Auditorium, Main Library – Rick Prelinger will present this "Lost Landscapes of San Francisco" event, an eclectic montage of lost and rarely-seen film clips showing life, landscapes and labor in a vanished San Francisco as captured by amateurs, newsreel cameramen and industrial filmmakers.
